Turn your passion for flying into a career with the Piloting major.

Our Bachelor of Aviation (Flight) - Major in Piloting is built for students who dream of taking the controls of a commercial aircraft. You’ll train on real aircraft and advanced simulators, gaining more than 195 flight hours while mastering aerodynamics, aviation law, navigation, and flight safety.

With direct mentoring from industry-experienced instructors and placements with aviation operators, you’ll graduate ready to step into the cockpit as a licensed commercial pilot.

Earn the credentials you need to fly professionally with our Bachelor of Aviation (Flight). Our  course provides students with everything they need for a Commercial Pilot Licence and Instrument Rating from CASA, equipping them as professional pilots.

Be "General Aviation" ready when you graduate

Our program prepares ambitious students for success in the professional aviation flight operations industry. You will receive hands-on training and experience in a variety of aircraft and environments tailored specifically towards enabling you to achieve your first job as a professional pilot.

Hone your skills in our dedicated flight simulator laboratory. This gives you a hands on learning experience and is utilised across  our theory units to enhance the practicality of the curriculum. This allows you to translate what you learn in lectures into a real world scenario with ease.

Course Details

How You Will Learn

This course takes a hands on and industry-led approach to education, providing students with a range of learning modalities throughout the course. Theoretical classes provide a blended learning opportunity where traditional lectures are complemented by dynamic workshops that push students to think reflexively.

Practical flight training occurs in the second semester and continues through the remainder of the course. This practical component is offered through our flight training partner Tristar Aviation located in Moorabbin.

This course is an intensive program and students are expected at least two days on campus and two-three days in Moorabbin for practical training, weather dependent.

In your second year, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a work placement internship unit in the Northern Territory, where you’ll gain first-hand experience with active general aviation (GA) companies.

This immersive placement lets you build valuable flight hours, experience the realities of the GA lifestyle, and develop professional skills that set you apart from the crowd and as a future commercial pilot.

  • Validate a coherent understanding and application of the body of knowledge, specified by the regulatory bodies for flight crew.
  • Analyse and develop responses, exercising a high-level of professional judgement, to ethical issues in the aviation industry from both national and international perspectives.
  • Review the application of theoretical knowledge within the field of Aviation and communicate this effectively, with justification, to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Analyse and evaluate operational situations and problems, related to aviation operations, and devise and apply appropriate solutions to achieve safe, efficient and compliant outcomes.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for admission all applicants must:

  • Be eligible for admission as defined in student entry requirements below and
  • Have lodged an application for admission to Holmes Institute
  • Successfully obtained a CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • Be eligible for Aviation Security ID Card
  • Attend interview and complete a skills assessment with Holmes Institute

Academic Requirements:

To be eligible for admission applicants must have:

  • Successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (senior high school), a Certificate IV or equivalent; or
  • Successfully completed an approved Tertiary Preparation Program, or a Foundation Year program offered by an accredited Institution of Higher Education;

English Requirements:

To be eligible for admission applicants must have:

  • Successfully completed studies in English (Language or Mode of Instruction) such as Year 12 at Australian High School or an Australian Diploma or higher qualification; or
  • Successfully completed studies at a recognised Australian educational institution at an equivalent study level based on at least a 50% pass rate in a recent semester of study; or
  • IELTS Overall 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5;
  • CASA also requires a General English Language Proficiency test prior to issuance of a licence. This test will be undertaken prior to initial flight training. Further information can be found here.

You may be eligible for FEE-HELP

You may be eligible to apply for a FEE-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of your tuition fees up to the HELP loan limit of $186,544 (2026 indexed rate). This course is eligible for the higher loan limit. Please contact a course advisor  to determine your eligibility.

Materials and other fees information

Students who undertake flight training will incur additional costs, which are detailed in the sections below. Prices are indicative only and are paid to bodies outside of Holmes Institute.

All CASA licence fees and first attempt at all CASA Theory Examinations are included in the course cost.

In some situations, students who require training above the maximum allotted flight hours for their course will be charged for any additional flight hours to achieve the required competencies. Each fee is for one additional hour of flying time. It will only be charged if additional hours above the allocated number of flying hours are required.
